Steve's journey in joinery began as a teenager apprenticing with his father in the UK. Over two decades, he has worked with some of Europe’s leading cabinetry firms on luxury homes, apartments, and spas, before moving to New Zealand where he gained experience in both design and production.
Today, as the founder of Harwood Joinery, Steve brings this wealth of knowledge to every project delivering bespoke furniture, shelving, and cabinetry that are carefully crafted, highly functional, and built to last from his workshop in Kingston.
Steve's Story
Joinery has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the UK learning the craft alongside my dad, who’s also a joiner. At 16, I started my apprenticeship with him, making timber windows, doors, and staircases for homes and listed buildings.
From there, I worked with some of the best in the business, honing my skills on high-end projects across Europe including apartments, spas, and homes where precision and craftsmanship mattered. That experience shaped the standards I still hold today.
When I came to Queenstown, I continued in high-end joinery, working my way from the bench to head joiner, then into design and client liaison. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to bring countless ideas to life, collaborating with architects, builders, and homeowners.
Starting Harwood Joinery from my workshop in Kingston was about coming back to what I value most: creating high-quality, handcrafted pieces with a personal touch. Whether it’s bespoke furniture, custom shelving, or cabinetry, my aim is simple; to craft something that’s made to fit your life and built to last.
